Activation Number Transformers Prime

This is a List of Primes and Matrix holders in the Transformers robot superhero franchise. 'Prime' is a fictional rank in the Transformers toy and entertainment franchise created by Hasbro and Takara Tomy. The title is usually given to the leader of the Autobots and bearer of the Matrix of Leadership though there are a few exceptions, the most notable of these was in Transformers Animated, where Prime was not a title, but a commanding rank amongst the Autobots, as indicated by Optimus to Sentinel, and second only to that of Magnus. In Japanese translations of Western Transformers fiction, as well as original Japanese fiction such as Beast Wars II, the equivalent to the Prime rank is 'Convoy'. For example, 'Rodimus Prime' would translate as 'Rodimus Convoy' in Japanese, while 'Lio Convoy' would translate as 'Leo Prime' in English.

Transformers: Generation 1[edit]

Activation number transformers prime number

The evidence for 'Prime' being a rank in the original comic and cartoon is weaker than elsewhere, but the case can still be made. The comic would introduce the 'Creation Matrix' and portray 'Prime' as a religious title, while the cartoons' 'Matrix of Leadership' was held by Prime as a military title. Though many Matrix-Bearers are seen, and all are by definition Autobot Leaders, only four are ever named on screen: Alpha Trion, Optimus Prime, Ultra Magnus, and Rodimus Prime. Without knowing any other names it is hard to make a concrete case here for 'Prime' being a title given only to Matrix-Bearers. Two decades later, the All-Spark Almaniac, revealed the names of all the 'Primes' seen in this continuity: Primon, Prima, Prime Nova, Guardian Prime, Zeta Prime, Sentinel Prime, Alpha Trion, Optimus Prime, Ultra Magnus, and Rodimus Prime.

Optimus Primal also held the matrix of leadership as well as Optimus Prime's spark for a time while Optimus Prime's body was being repaired by the Maximals.

A list has surfaced on Weibo for 2019 products in collector oriented Hasbro Transformers line. This list includes toys we already know about, like Siege leader Optimus Prime but also toys we had.

Character nameDescription
ITDuring the Hate Plague After Optimus Prime is brought back to life, He Dives into the Matrix of Leadership asking all the same question and while traveling back past other Matrix of Leadership holders Past Primon to the first Matrix of Leadership Holder known only as IT.
Primon/Alpha PrimePrimon (Alpha Prime in Dreamwave Productions) is one of the oldest known bearers of the Matrix. As he predated Prima, who is characterized as the first Transformer created on Cybertron, it is conceivable that he predates the planet itself. He is an early robot seen by Rodimus Prime during his journey through the Matrix.
PrimaDescribed as a warrior of light, and the 'First Made', Prima is the first Transformer created by Primus, the original holder of the Matrix of Leadership, and wields a legendary sword called the Star Saber. He first appeared in the Marvel Transformers comic books in 1989.
Nova/Nemesis PrimeNova Prime/Prime Nova was the holder of the Matrix before Sentinel Prime. According to Omega Supreme, Nova Prime wanted to expand the Cybertronian race and influence the course of cosmic events. He believed that the Transformers were above other lifeforms and that the universe should be molded in their image. Nova Prime was aboard the first Ark when it disappeared into the Dead Universe. He would later resurface as 'Nemesis Prime'.
Guardian PrimeThough originally referred to as the Pre-Transformer, he was retroactively named Guardian Prime.
Nominus PrimeNominus Prime assumed office sometime after the disappearance of Nova Prime into the Benzuli Expanse. Under his rule, Cybertron was a planet full of corruption, social apartheid, and general oppression: a Cybertronian citizen's role in life was determined by the body he was built in.
Zeta PrimeThough originally referred to as the New Narrator, he was retroactively named Zeta Prime. In the IDW Comics his role was expanded, making him a tyrant.
Sentinel PrimeThe UK G1 comic series shows a flashback (as recalled by Optimus) of Sentinel Prime dying in the arms of Optimus Prime and passing the Matrix on to him. This is not to be confused by the earlier UK Annual story 'State Games' where Optimus has gone for help leaving an Autobot Leader named Overlord (not Sentinel Prime) who then dies watched by an unhelping Megatron and Sentinel's ex-bodyguard, Ravage.
Alpha TrionThere are no accounts of Alpha Trion ever officially holding the Matrix in the role of Autobot leader - the only certainty is that he kept it safe between the death of the most recent Autobot leader, and the appointment of Optimus Prime. His presence within the Matrix when Optimus Prime consults its wisdom to stop the Hate Plague would suggest otherwise, but later expansions on the fiction of the Matrix illustrate that it is not merely Autobot leaders who inhabit it, but all deceased Transformers, explaining Trion's presence. Alpha Trion-known at the time as A3-also led an Autobot resistance against the Quintessons, but there is no indication that he carried the Matrix in this capacity.
Alchemist Prime
Vector Prime
Optimus PrimeThe first archivist to become Autobot leader. As Megatron besieged the Autobot capital of Iacon, the Council of Elders prepared to surrender to the Decepticons. Councillor Xaaron suggested that High Councillor Traachon step down and allow a military officer to assume Autobot leadership. Traachon then used his powers of veto and effectively elected himself out of office, allowing Optimus Prime to assume supreme command of the Autobots. He has had a variety of names in Japan such as Convoy, Star Convoy and Battle Convoy.
Buster WitwickyPrime briefly transferred the Matrix to Buster's mind to prevent Shockwave's use of it.
ThunderwingWhile the above possessed the Matrix at one point or another, not all became a part of the Matrix. The Matrix was shown to have its own 'consciousness' of sorts during the Matrix Quest, where it referred to itself in plural. Prior to the evil being purged from the Matrix, it 'spoke' its 'contributors': 'We are Primus. We are Prima. We are Prime Nova. We are Sentinel Prime. We are Optimus Prime. We are Thunderwing.'[1]
StarscreamSimilarly, in the short-lived Marvel Generation 2 series, Starscream stole the Matrix and took it as a part of himself. The Matrix began turning Starscream away from evil and toward good. It was so powerful that Starscream gave the Matrix back to Prime in order to keep from becoming good and losing his evil nature.
Megatron/GalvatronIn the short-lived Marvel Generation 2 series, Megatron took the Matrix from Prime, but he never used it. Following his transformation into Galvatron, he has briefly been able to steal the Matrix on occasion, but has consistently failed to harness its power.
Ultra MagnusShowed no ability to open the Matrix or use its power in the movie, but in Robots in Disguise he could access its power.
Rodimus PrimeUK Marvel Comics included Rodimus Prime in their stories, and he once lost the Matrix to a Quintesson General, Ghyrik. He lost it again to the Decepticons at one point while in a vehicular skirmish with Dead End and Wildrider of the Stunticons, where which Galvatron tried to use it (see Megatron/Galvatron). When he couldn't, he ordered Scourge to destroy it; however Scourge saw differently (see below). In Japan, he was known as Rodimus Convoy.
ScourgeScourge displayed amplified physical powers when he held the Matrix for a short period, suggesting an affinity for it. However, Scourge's physical structure was monstrously mutated when he was filled with the Matrix's power.
General HawkA veteran artillery officer with a lengthy combat record, General Clayton M. 'Clay' Abernathy, codename Hawk, leads G.I. Joe, a United States military taskforce dedicated to stopping the terrorist organization Cobra. He briefly possessed the matrix in the G.I. Joe vs. the Transformers crossover comic book series.

Beast Era[edit]

It's only passingly touched on, but may be noteworthy that the phrase, 'Who died and made you Prime?' was used by Maximal characters in Beast Wars, implying that, to them, 'prime' was roughly equivalent to 'leader'. They also used the word to mean 'great' or 'good' in the phrases 'That's just prime,' (said sarcastically), and 'Feeling prime.' The Beast Era would introduce a number of 'Convoy' characters that would later become 'Primes' when introduced into American fiction. Many of these Convoy figure were Maximal leaders who carried their own versions of the Matrix of Leadership.

Character nameDescription
Optimus Primal/Optimal OptimusLike his ancestor Optimus Prime, whose name he took in reverence, Optimus Primal was not originally a warrior. He transforms into a Silverback Gorilla. In Japan, he has been known as Convoy, or Beast Convoy to differentiate himself from the original Optimus Prime. He was also known as Metals Convoy when he upgraded into Transmetal form and subsequently Powered Convoy when he became Optimal Optimus. Due to this latter transformation involving him taking the Spark of the original Optimus Prime into his body, many believed that this meant that he briefly carried the Matrix of Leadership but this is in fact not true, the Beast Wars version of Optimus Primal has never held the Matrix of Leadership.

In Beast Wars II: Lio Convoy's Close Call!, Optimus Primal appears carrying a Matrix similar to Lio Convoy's that enables him to take on a more powerful form. 'Ask Vector Prime' revealed that Primal's presence in this alternate timeline caused his own personal history to alter somewhat, making him a Convoy and thus a Matrix holder.

Lio Convoy/Leo PrimeLeo Prime, also known as Lio Convoy, is a Maximal commander who leads The Pack. His alternate modes are a White Lion, Mechanical White Lion, and Mechanical Lion. Originally a brave and noble Maximal commander, after his ship was attacked by a group of Predacons led by Galvatron, Convoy was dispatched to pursue the Predacons and bring them to justice.
Big ConvoyA One-man-army who became the teacher of the Maximal cadets. Beast-mode is a wooly mammoth with a tank-like mode.
Great ConvoyGreat Convoy was apparently the Supreme Commander of the Council of Convoy, and in the Beast Wars II manga it is he who appoints Lio Convoy to go after the Predacons.
Crow ConvoyMember of the Council of Convoys. The Council of Convoys is actually the Maximal Council of Elders: the Maximal Equivalent of the Tripredacus Council during the Beast Wars era, specifically the Japanese-exclusive 1999 anime Beast Wars: Neo .
Primal PrimeWritten into a special edition comic book was a character by the name of Primal Prime. Appearing only in this book, he is a side character to the Beast Machines story and was later written into the toy lines of both Beast Machines and Transformers: Universe.
Soundblaster/Logos PrimeIn Beast Wars: Reborn, a text story set after the events of Beast Machines, a new character known as Logos Prime was introduced. Abducting Optimus Primal and Megatron, he let them wander his temple in the hopes that one of them would prove a worthy successor to his power. He was subsequently confronted by the arriving Vector Prime, who recognized Logos as a former comrade.
Legend ConvoyA member of the Primal Council introduced in 'Dawn of the Predacus'; she is notable as the first known female Convoy, with Venus Terzo reading her lines during the script reading at BotCon 2016. Apart from her membership on the council at the conclusion of the Great War and during Megatron's takeover of Cybertron prior to Beast Machines, little else is known about her.

Robots in Disguise[edit]

Character nameDescription
Optimus PrimeLeader of the Autobots, bearer of the Matrix and brother to Ultra Magnus, Optimus Prime transforms into a fire engine. The forward portion of the truck transforms into Prime himself, while the rear portion can form a mobile weapons platform/communications array/recharging station, or combine with Prime as additional armor and weapons in Super Mode. Optimus Prime was named Fire Convoy in the Japanese version of the series.
ScourgeScourge was originally one of six unidentified Autobots sent to Earth to reactivate Fortress Maximus. In present time, Megatron came to Earth with the intent of harnessing Maximus's power and steals the six protoforms, taking them to a nearby military base to scan vehicle modes and infusing them with a part of his own spark energy to transform them into Decepticons. Scourge was born when Megatron scanned a tanker truck, Optimus Prime, truck driver Kelly, and an infusion of his own spark energy. While Scourge was not actually a Prime in the American series, he was named Black Convoy in the Japanese version of the series.
Ultra MagnusUltra Magnus, known as God Magnus in the Japanese 2000 line, Transformers: Car Robots, owed his name and alternate mode to Ultra Magnus (and also to Godbomber, an earlier character from the G1 'Super-God Masterforce' anime, who disassembled to form armor for his Prime-styled partner, Ginrai), so when the series was released in the US, the name change was obvious, and Ultra Magnus returned to TV screens for the first time since the G1 series. Ultra Magnus transforms into a car carrier capable of transporting other Autobots such as the Autobot Brothers. While Magnus was not actually a Prime, he did bear a Matrix in the Japanese version of the series. It is also implied that he could be somehow sharing the energy of the Matrix with Optimus as he had an outburst of energy that supercharged the Autobot Brothers. Magnus can combine with Optimus to form Omega Prime, but wiether or not this somehow makes Magnus a Prime himself is debatable among the fandom.
Omega PrimeWhen his brother, Optimus Prime, was chosen to carry the Matrix, Ultra Magnus felt passed over, and was left carrying a grudge against his brother that eventually exploded into violence when he arrived on Earth with the intention of taking what he believed was rightfully his- by force, if necessary.[2] Severely injuring Prime, who refused to fight back, Magnus tracked him to a desert island, where he pretended to offer him the hand of friendship, only to attempt to absorb the Matrix for himself, forcing the brothers into the powerful combined form of Omega Prime. Omega Prime was named God Fire Convoy in the Japanese version of the series.
DefensorAs revealed in 'Ask Vector Prime,' a Defensor mentioned as the nemesis of Megazarak succeeded Optimus Prime as the bearer of the Matrix of Leadership.

Unicron Trilogy[edit]

The Optimus Prime of the alternate universe of Transformers: Armada also possesses a Matrix (Much like the original Matrix, it serves as the symbol of the Autobot Commander). 'Prime' is indeed a title given to leaders and Matrix-bearers in the Unicron Trilogy universe, as evidenced by both Vector Prime and Optimus Prime, but no other Primes are ever named. In Galaxy Force, Override (Nitro Convoy), Scourge (Flame Convoy), Evac (Live Convoy), and Metroplex (Megalo Convoy) all hold the title of Convoy as leaders of their respective planets, but this scheme does not carry over into the western translation, and so the Prime appellation does not apply. Likewise, in Super Link, the Japanese version of Energon, Rodimus is known as 'Rodimus Convoy', hearkening back to the name of his G1 predecessor. But again, this does not follow through in Hasbro's materials. Vector Prime is not known as Vector Convoy in Japan, but Vector Prime, while Optimus maintains the traditional Convoy title as Galaxy Convoy.

Character nameDescription
Optimus PrimeThe Transformers: Armada incarnation of Optimus Prime (known as Convoy in Japan) has the ability to transform into a semi-truck as well as combine with Jetfire to form Jet Convoy or Overload to form Magna Convoy. He can also combine with both of them to form Magna Jet Convoy. In Transformers: Energon, Optimus Prime (now called Grand Convoy in Japan) has the capacity to combine with Wing Saber to form Wing Convoy or Omega Supreme to form Omega Convoy. In Transformers: Cybertron, Optimus Prime (Galaxy Convoy) has the ability to combine with Leobreaker to form Liger Convoy or Wing Saber to form Sonic Convoy.
Nemesis PrimeNemesis Prime only ever appeared in one Transformers: Armada episode called 'Puppet' as an evil clone of Optimus Prime created by Unicron. He is known as Scourge in Japan, possibly as a homage to the character of the same name from Transformers: Robots in Disguise who was also an evil clone of Optimus Prime.
RodimusRodimus is a great military commander and a superior warrior, yet strives for peace and freedom. First at odds with Optimus Prime for his conduct of the war against the Decepticons, Rodimus eventually became Optimus' right-hand man and de factocommander of the Autobots when Optimus himself was unavailable. While never actually called 'Rodimus Prime', he was referred to as 'Rodimus Convoy' in the Japanese version of Energon, hearkening back to the name of his G1 predecessor.
OverrideLong-time ruler of Velocitron, Sonic Commander Override's life is dominated by racing, to the extent that she would not impart information, or even hold a conversation with anyone if they did not face her in a race. While Override was not a Prime in the American series, she was a male character named Nitro Convoy in the Japanese version of the series.
ScourgeScourge is the brutal and very powerful ruler of the Jungle Planet. He views any display of kindness, compassion or generosity as weakness, and he hates weakness. While Scourge was not a Prime in the American series, he was named Flame Convoy in the Japanese version of the series.
EvacGuardian of Earth's Cyber Planet Key, Aerial Commander Evac has existed secretly on the planet for many years, repeatedly switching alternate modes and aiding humans in danger. While Evac was not a Prime in the American series, he was named Live Convoy in the Japanese version of the series.
MetroplexMetroplex is the leader of the Gigantion, where Transformers are much bigger than traditional sizes and the main way of life involves constructing new cities on top of the old ones. While Metroplex was not a Prime in the American series, he was named Megalo Convoy in the Japanese version of the series.
Vector PrimeA singular entity within the multiverse, Vector Prime is one of the Original Thirteen Transformers created by Primus to combat the threat posed by his eternal foe, the Chaos-Bringer, Unicron.[3] He is an old and wise Autobot.[4] Vector Prime is not known as Vector Convoy in Japan, but as Vector Prime in both versions of the series.

Thirteen Original Transformers[edit]

In the fictional narrative of the Transformers universe, the Prime lineage began with the Thirteen Original Transformers created when the universe began by Primus to aid him in his battle against Unicron. They went on to become the foundation of life on Cybertron. The story concept of the Original Thirteen, as well as three of their members (Prima, Liege Maximo and The Fallen), were created by comic book writer Simon Furman.

Live-action film series[edit]

In the live action film series, the Dynasty of Primes are the first wielders of the Matrix and used it to power a Sun Harvester. After learning that Earth contained intelligent life, they refused to use it and The Fallen fought them over it. He was too powerful for them so they stole it and sacrificed themselves to hide it. Sam Witwicky found it but it crumbled to dust in his hands. However, in a vision, the Dynasty gave it to him to wield as he proved worthy of it, telling him that the Matrix is something that must be earned not found. He used it to revive Optimus, but The Fallen took it before it completely healed Optimus. Used to power the Sun Harvester, it survived and was given back to Optimus after he destroyed the harvester.

Transformers Animated[edit]

Prime is still a rank in the Transformers Animated continuity, but (uniquely) it is distinctly lower than commander of all Autobots (that would be Ultra Magnus — the 'Magnus' refers to his rank). This is revealed when Sentinel Prime attempts to give an order to Optimus Prime. Optimus is able to disregard this order because regardless of Sentinel's standing on the Cybertron Elite Guard, they are both still Primes of equal rank. The Elite Guard members, Ultra Magnus and Sentinel Prime, have bars on their forearms, with more bars present for the superior officer. Optimus Prime lacks these, and as such it is unknown if they are only present on the Elite Guard. The rank of Prime seems to be roughly equivalent to the human naval rank of captain.

Character nameDescription
Longarm Prime/ShockwaveShockwave has the ability to change his body, using this power to assume the guise of Longarm in order to creep up the Autobot ranks and serve Megatron incognito.
Optimus PrimeInstead of being leader of the Autobots, Prime was actually a washout from the Elite Guard. Despite no longer being a member, he maintains his military ranking of 'Prime'.
RodimusRodimus Prime/Minor is a character who appeared in season 3 of the Transformers Animated series. He is an homage to the Generation 1 version of the character Hot Rod.[5]
Sentinel PrimeSentinel Prime is a hotheaded member of the Cybertron Elite Guard. Sentinel's main weapon is a shield called the Skyboom Shield, that is able to generate force fields and can be used offensively when thrown. He also wields a laser lance, and can activate a battle mask when needed.[6]

Transformers:Timelines[edit]

Character nameDescription
Modus PrimeThe leader of a group of Mini-Cons assigned by the Last Autobot to rebuild Cybertron in preparation for the return of the Autobots and Decepticons. Modus was murdered by Mini-Cons who feared that once their mission was completed the Last Autobot would reabsorb them into himself.

The Convoy[edit]

In the Transformers: Timelines Vlc mpeg 2 codec. fiction, the Transtech formed a group known as the Convoy, made up of Primes/analogous leaders from various reality streams in order to deal with threats to the multiverse. The identities of several members of the Convoy were designated 'Classified' by Axiom Nexus Security, but were made known due to the efforts of Renegades from the Go-bots universe.[7][8]

Character nameDescription
Black Convoy/Nemesis Prime
Akiba PrimeThe only known female member of the Convoy.
Lio Convoy/Leo PrimeA version of the Maximal from Beast Wars II: Super Life-Form Transformers (based on the Generations Leo Prime figure, a remold of Cybertron Leobreaker).
ScourgeThe only Decepticon member of the Convoy, a version of Generation 1 Scourge who retained possession of the Matrix of Leadership (obtained through events similar to those in the episode 'The Burden Hardest to Bear'). Due to the influence of the Matrix, most notably the guidance of the fallen Optimus Prime, he eventually brought peace between the Decepticons and Autobots of his reality. While leading them in battle against the returned Unicron, he was blasted by his enemy but transported to Axiom Nexus.
Optimus Prime/Ignition PrimeA version of Transformers: Robots in Disguise Optimus Prime with yellow coloration (based on a Sam's Club exclusive repaint of the character).
Optimus Prime/Hero PrimeA version of Generation 1 Optimus Prime (based on the toy of the same name).
Optimus Prime/Beast PrimeA version of Unicron Trilogy Optimus Prime (based on the 'Jungle Planet Optimus Prime' toy, a repaint of the 10th anniversary Beast WarsOptimus Primal figure).
Zeemon MagnusA predecessor to Ultra Magnus and previous wielder of the Magnus Hammer (from the universe of Transformers: Animated). He was exiled from his reality
Primal PrimeA Maximal (based on the Beast Machines recolor of Optimal Optimus).
Sentinel MaximusAn Autobot from the Beast Wars timeline (based on the Universe remold of Overload).
General HawkA member of G.I. Joe who in some storylines has been exposed to the Matrix of Leadership.
Bendy-Bus PrimeA Transformer in the style of the Transformers film series with the alternate mode of a Bendy bus (based on a promotion for Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen that took place in the United Kingdom[9]). He was brought to Earth after receiving Optimus Prime's signal, before being brought to Axiom Nexus and leaving behind a lifeless facsimile.
General Optimus PrimeA more militaristic incarnation of Optimus Prime (a BotCon exclusive based on the unreleased Transformers: Generation 2 toy of the same name).

Transformers: Prime[edit]

In the 'Aligned Continuity' (which includes the video games Transformers: War for Cybertron and Transformers: Fall of Cybertron, their tie-in novels Exodus, Exiles and Retribution, and the television series Transformers: Prime), the Prime rank is similar to its portrayal in the original series. 'Prime' is the name given to the leader of the Autobots and holder of the Matrix of Leadership, which is passed down to a successor at the end of the current Prime's reign. Characters shown to be part of the Prime lineage in this continuity include Optimus Prime and Sentinel Zeta Prime (referred to as 'Sentinel Prime' in the novels and 'Zeta Prime' in the video games).

Character nameDescription
Orion Pax
/Optimus Prime
Optimus Prime (formerly Orion Pax) was a veteran military commander and second in command who wields an ion blaster and a double bladed energon axe. He became the leader of the Autobots after Zeta Prime fell in battle, but is not certain he wants the responsibility. The war with the Decepticons was going badly, and it looked like there was no end in sight. He vowed to himself and to the warriors under his command that he would never surrender, never retreat, and never stop fighting until the Decepticons were defeated.
Sentinel Zeta PrimeSentinel Zeta Prime, who appeared Transformers: War for Cybertron and Transformers: Exodus, is Optimus Prime's predecessor as Autobot Commander and bore the sigil of Vector Prime. He was portrayed as the former Autobot leader in the game, however in the book, he wasn't an Autobot at all since the factions weren't formed until later. His death would lead to Optimus becoming the Autobot leader.

While he didn't hold the Matrix, the Autobot's human ally, Jack Darby, was entrusted with the Key to Vector Sigma, thus he was entrusted with the fate of the Matrix of Leadership and was even referred to as an 'honorary Prime' at one point by Miko Nakadai. Jack was entrusted with the key after the Autobots and Megatron discovered that Unicron's spark dwelt at the center of the Earth, and Prime, having given the key to Jack as he was not expecting to survive, emptied the full power of the Matrix into Unicron's spark upon traveling there. After Unicron was successfully returned to stasis, the Matrix was drained of its energy, and although Optimus did survive, he lost not merely the wisdom of the Primes, but all of his own memories since becoming a Prime. Fortunately, it was revealed that the key allows the Matrix to be refilled, and thus Optimus's memory restored, via the mega-computer Vector Sigma on Cybertron. Jack and Arcee traveled to Cybertron to load the key with energy to restore the Matrix, then returned to Earth in the midst of a battle between Orion and Megatron. Though the archivist was hesitant at first, Jack convinced him that he was in fact worthy and used the key to restore the Matrix's power and Optimus's memories.

In season three, Smokescreen was chosen by the Matrix to succeed Optimus Prime. However, Smokescreen used the Forge of Solus Prime to restore Optimus to life and therefore does not become a Prime or holder of the Matrix.

The Fallen is a fictional robot supervillain in the Transformers robot superhero franchise. According to Hasbro, he was formerly known as Megatronus Prime, and was a multiversal singularity, meaning that while he exists across the multiverse, this is no longer the case because of an event called The Shrouding, where all multiversal singularities within the Hasbro-Takaramultiversal now exist as separate beings within each universe. As explained in more detail in the appropriate sections below, The Fallen has been given different origin stories in several of the different continuities in which he has appeared. Although the Fallen's origins are only suggested in his comic book appearance, they would be fully explained in Dorling Kindersley's Transformers: The Ultimate Guide.

Megatronus was one of the original Thirteen Primes created by Primus and the founder of the Decepticons in many storylines. Originally, he was depicted as having betrayed his creator by siding with Primus' dark twin, Unicron. In the final battle between Primus and Unicron, Megatronus fell victim to the same fate as his master, sucked through a black hole into another dimension. However, while Unicron emerged in another universe, the Fallen was not so fortunate, finding himself trapped in the 'underspace' between dimensions. This origin has been altered or revised several times, even to the point that Primus and Unicron are removed entirely, even so, this is because he can jump through time and space, and hop dimensions, like the other Thirteen Primes.

Challenge of the GoBots[edit]

In the 1985 Challenge of the GoBots episode 'Search for the Ancient Gobonauts', 'the Evil One', is retroactively a version of Megatronus, according to 'Ask Vector Prime'. He nearly destroyed Gobotron with a device called the Dark Heart, only to wind up under the Nazca Lines on Earth. Centuries later, Cy-Kill goes on a quest to look for the ancient villain.

Transformers: Generation 1 continuities[edit]

Beast Wars[edit]

Years before the Fallen was introduced in the Generation 1 Dreamwave Productions comic book, Transformers: Beast Wars would introduce a similar character. This character was known simply 'Megatron'. Both the Generation 1Megatron and Beast EraMegatron named themselves after this mythological figure. It is unknown if this Megatron named himself after him or if they are the same character, but all that is known about him is that he is 'the beginning and the end' and 'the alpha and omega', or at least claims to be as something of a God complex.

Dreamwave Productions[edit]

The Fallen made his first appearance in the second volume of Transformers: The War Within (2003). Around 6.5 million years ago, an accident in the 'space bridge' system on Cybertron liberated the Fallen from his prison, and he materialized on Cybertron, where he quickly recruited the Chaos Trinity - Bludgeon, Mindwipe and Bugly - into his employ. Abducting Transformers that he identified as possessing 'genetic potential' within their sparks - Grimlock, Blitzwing, Jetfire and Hot Spot - the Fallen planned to use their energies to awaken Primus from his self-imposed slumber, thereby alerting Unicron to his location, allowing the world-eater to renew hostilities with his old enemy. An attack from combined Autobot and Decepticon forces led by Shockwave and Prowl disrupted his plans, and Primus himself reached out and promptly destroyed the Fallen.

Fun Publications[edit]

The Fallen made an appearance in the story Vector Prime: In the Beginning published by Fun Publications. This issue shows many key points in previous Transformers stories from across the original comics, the original cartoon, Beast Wars, and the Armada television series. It establishes that there is one Unicron across the multiple continuities, and that Vector Prime travels through all of Transformers history. One of the silhouettes of the first 12 Transformers that stands behind Vector Prime in his first panel appears to be that of The Fallen. The later storyline 'Another Light' saw Megatronus in an unlikely reunion with his fellow Primes, attempting to prevent Nexus Prime from creating firmer barriers between the various multiversal streams. This effort failed, and resulted in the Thirteen, Primus, and Unicron being split into separate beings with different personalities across the various dimensions. The 'Ask Vector Prime' Facebook page also introduced other historical elements to Megatronus' character, such as him and his fellow Primes communicating with ancient Earth using holographic avatars that inspired the gods of Greek mythology, with Megatronus inspiring Ares.

IDW Publishing[edit]

Nexus Prime claimed that Megatronus, in collusion with Liege Maximo, began the First Cybertronian Civil War between the Thirteen and the tribes each Prime led. He broke a promise to Solus Prime and betrayed Prima. A notable figure in the war was Megatronus' former underling, Galvatron, who succeeded in killing Nexus Prime. In the end, the war forced eleven of the Thirteen to leave Cybertron, and Megatronus chose another planet to reside on. His location was later discovered by Shockwave, who seeded the planet with one of his Regenesis ores.

Dawn of the Universe and war between chaos and order[edit]

Megatronus was one of the Thirteen Original Primes, the first Transformers created by Primus to battle together against the chaos bringer Unicron. Thanks to his love interest Solus Prime - who created a cosmic weapon called the Requiem Blaster capable of vanquishing Unicron - Megatronus was able to depower him, forcing him to temporarily but in a long-term period of time remain in stasis. As the Thirteen rested, Solus Prime was convinced that the Requiem Blaster should be destroyed, not to fall in wrong hands. On the other hand, Megatronus believed that the Blaster should be kept in order to assist the Primes in future sieges. The brief skirmish for possession of the Blaster resulted in its accidental activation, brutally murdering Solus and transforming her corpse into the Well of All Sparks. After the other Eleven considered this an unforgivable crime and banished Megatronus for that, they locked away the Requiem Blaster and built a tomb for Solus surrounded by a deep cave.

Deception[edit]

Devastated, Megatronus gathered an army of followers which he named the Decepticons, inspired by his rage after losing his beloved one. From there, Megatronus set up a plan to recover Solus from the Well by draining the Sparks of all other sentient beings in the Universe. However, he was stopped by Prima, who idealized it would not be worth it to sacrifice billions of new Sparks for an ancient one. It is unknown which path Megatronus took after the showdown. Meanwhile, billions of years later, Megatronus's legacy was inherited by Megatron, who created the Decepticons as of his own vision for the planet Cybertron.

Major forces in play[edit]

Later in the Earth-year 2018, after the Earth Wars between Autobots and Decepticons ended and Optimus Prime was resurrected and exiled with Megatron and a new High Council - Starscream, Rodimus Prime, and Mistress of Flame - took over the reborn Cybertron after Unicron's second defeat by the new Matrix-bearer Rodimus; Megatronus has sent the Prime artifact known as the Enigma of Combination to spark a flame to the Combiner Wars, followed by the Titan Wars. He has also collaborated with Overlord, who arrived in Unicron's corpse to claim the Matrix of Chaos. After the clash between Trypticon and Fortress Maximus was over, Megatronus arrived and - at the presence of the renegade Megatron, Windblade, Victorion and Perceptor - murdered Optimus Prime again and claimed the Matrix of Leadership and the Enigma as fundamental parts of his plot to revive Solus Prime in the Well with a machine of his own.

Power of the Primes[edit]

Angered by Megatronus, Windblade, Megatron, Victorion and Perceptor travelled to a Swamp to claim the Requiem Blaster before him, coincidentally recruiting the Combiners Volcanicus, Predaking and the Requiem Blaster's current protector, Optimus Primal. However, Megatronus later arrived to claim back the Blaster as the team was weakened after a showdown with Overlord - who was seeking revenge against Megatron - and Rodimus Cron - a renegade Hot Rod possessed by Unicron after inheriting the Matrix of Chaos. With the Blaster, the Matrix and the Enigma in his possession, Megatronus teleported back to the Well of All Sparks to fuse the three artifacts in a machine that would use the Enigma to combine the essence of the Matrix with the power of the Blaster and drain every Cybertronian's Spark throughout the Universe, bringing the Transformers to their final days.

Just as Megatronus's machine was activated, the team arrived and damaged it, causing it to briefly go offline. Angered, Megatronus incapacitated all of the members but Megatron by paralyzing them with painful flames. And just as Megatronus is ready to finish his follower off for good, Rodimus Cron arrives and is completely assumed by Unicron, becoming the new overpowered entity known as Rodimus Unicronus, willing to destroy the Matrix of Leadership and the last remnants of his brother Primus within it, as well as destroying the last surviving Original Prime. As Megatronus and Unicron engaged in the closest showdown between Primus and Unicron ever since the dawn of the Universe, Optimus Primal was able to break Megatronus's machine once and for all with the assistance of Grimlock and Windblade and then he recovered the Matrix of Leadership. Enraged again by another nuisance to his plans, Megatronus attempted to stop Primal, but before this was possible he was able to open the Matrix for himself, becoming the new Matrix-bearer Optimal Optimus.

As the fight proceeded, Megatronus was seen fighting the rest of the team as Optimal should fend-off Rodimus Unicronus. When the worst moment came, as the Requiem Blaster was aimed to the team (and more specifically Megatron), Predaking arrived and was able to briefly immobilize Megatronus, later being unfortunately murdered by him as a consequence. During this time, Megatron negotiated with the fading-away figure of a resurrected Solus Prime to stop Megatronus, and during the same time the rest of the team was able to immobilize Rodimus and take the Matrix of Chaos out of his chest. When Solus accepted the deal - for she would not accept her beloved one could take any more lives - Megatronus was lured into the Well of All Sparks, instantly draining his lifeless body inside. It is known that Megatronus will resurrect in the future due to his immortality and his mutant Spark. However, this date is not predicted and could perhaps never arrive as Megatronus may decided to stay in the Realm of All Sparks aside her beloved one and the rest of the Original Primes.

Legacy[edit]

After the death of Megatronus Prime, Megatron has now completely given up his Decepticon tyrant life as he realized his way could perhaps not be the right, pending to sacrifice himself to stop Unicron from returning once again and banishing himself and Unicron's Anti-Spark (the Matrix of Chaos) to the Realm of All Sparks by allowing Optimus Primal to fire the Requiem Blaster on him.

And after Megatron's departure, Optimus Prime's Spark was unplugged from the Well, allowing him to return to function. The Matrix of Leadership remained in Optimal's possession, however, enabling him to lead the Maximals in a fight against the Predacons (Beast Wars) in the distant future.

The character appears as the main antagonist in the second live action film, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, the 2009 sequel to the 2007 Transformers movie.[2] Director Michael Bay described him as 'apocalyptic'.[3] He has the ability to teleport and generate a shockwave upon reappearance. The Fallen is armed with a void scepter. He also has telekinesis. He stands 42 ft (13 m) tall with a mass of 10 short tons (9.1 metric tons).[4]

IDW Publishing[edit]

In Transformers: Defiance, the artifact containing the Fallen is unearthed when Cybertron is under attack by aliens that desire the AllSpark. During the fight, Megatron is gravely injured as the Fallen awakens from his rest, healing Megatron while taking him under his wing with promises of power. Under the guidance of the Fallen, Megatron reforms the Decepticons and plunges Cybertron into Civil War. In the prose story Transformers: Convergence, it is revealed that Fallen freed himself from his prison after Soundwave presented him Sentinel Prime Space bridge Pillars, explaining how he got freed before the events of Revenge of the Fallen happened.

Role in the film[edit]

The original seven Primes scattered throughout the galaxy looking for planets where they could build Star Harvesters. These massive machines create energon, the vital energy of Transformers, by destroying suns and were activated by an artifact known as the Matrix of Leadership. The Dynasty of Primes had one rule: Star Harvesters were not to be built in systems which contain life. One of them, believing that the Cybertronians were the ultimate race and destined to rule the universe, and also due to his hatred for the human race, chose to ignore this rule. He arrived on Earth in 17,000 B.C., where he began construction of a new Star Harvester. To assist him, the treacherous Megatronus Prime, now known as The Fallen, assembled an army of like-minded Cybertronians who called themselves 'Decepticons'. Identifying themselves with a symbol based on the fearsome visage of the Fallen, the Decepticons built the Harvester in prehistoric Egypt, where they slaughtered any humans who discovered the Harvester. Learning of his betrayal, the other Primes launched an assault on the Decepticon forces. Although they were unable to kill the Fallen, the Primes succeeded in capturing and imprisoning him before sealing the Matrix within a tomb made of their own bodies, thus sacrificing themselves to help save Earth and humanity.

As a result, the Fallen became the first Decepticon and the true founder and leader of the Decepticons (as Megatron accepts the Fallen as his master), and all future Decepticons would wear an insignia which is similar to the Fallen's face.

In the present day, the Fallen appears after millennia and resumes leadership of the Decepticons. As he was weakened in the fight against the other Primes, he has spent all this time stuck on his ship on a planet far from Earth, draining energy from the Cybertronian protoforms on the ship to regain his strength. The Fallen reveals to the revived Megatron that the knowledge from the AllSpark they seek so they can find the Matrix is now in Sam Witwicky, making him the key to another source of Energon, gained from the Sun Harvester, and commands Megatron to find Sam. He also reveals that he can only be defeated by a descendant of the Primes, with the last survivor of these descendants killed by Megatron. Now confident of no threats to him, the Fallen himself travels to Earth to complete his plans to destroy humanity, demanding the humans to turn over Sam to him otherwise the Decepticons will kill them all. Because of this, Sam is branded a fugitive by the world. Later, the Fallen, along with Megatron and the Decepticons, travel to the Great Pyramids of Giza, where the Fallen's Sun Harvester lies beneath one of the pyramids. There, seconds after Optimus Prime has been resurrected by Sam, the Fallen easily knocks a weakened Optimus down, steals the Matrix of Leadership from Optimus' body and teleports to the Sun Harvester. With Optimus too weak to battle him alone, the Fallen uses the Matrix to activate the Sun Harvester, and none of the human forces are able to stop the Fallen. However, Optimus receives parts from Jetfire, making him super-powerful, arrives on the scene and promptly destroys the Sun Harvester while knocking the Fallen and Megatron off the pyramid. The Fallen and Optimus Prime then engage in a fierce duel. Megatron tries to help his master, but is quickly overpowered and knocked out by Optimus. The Fallen counterattacks Optimus, managing to knock away his sword and rip off one of his rocket thrusters before he attacks Optimus with his scepter, but Optimus viciously retaliates by tearing the Fallen's face off with his own weapon. Realizing that he is losing, the Fallen tries to escape, but Optimus punches through his chest and crushes his spark core, finally killing him. Horrified at his master's demise, a wounded Megatron swears vengeance and flees with Starscream, taking over as the new leader.

Megatronus is one of the Thirteen Primes in Transformers: Prime and Transformers: Robots in Disguise. He is called 'The Fallen' at times, but never addressed as such when he actually appears. This version of Megatronus bears a striking resemblance to Generation 1Galvatron and transforms into a tank that resembles the tank mode of Shockwave's alternate mode from Transformers Animated. Though the exact origins with the Decepticons are unclear, he is called the 'first Decepticon' and bears a Decepticon insignia, a possible nod to Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. Plates surrounding his face can become a mask that obscures/protects his facial features, and in addition to sporting arm cannons he wields a powerful spear and possesses supernatural abilities such as telekinesis.

Books[edit]

Megatronus is mentioned as one of the original thirteen Primes in the 2010 book Transformers: Exodus. Megatron is shown originally calling himself Megatronus, after this particular Prime, and is a gladiator, who then takes the name Megatron after the name is shortened by cheering fans at one of his matches. Megatronus, though the namesake of the Decepticon leader Megatron in the book, holds no sway over Megatron, who took the name simply because he had none of his own and wished to be associated with power and grandeur.

According to Transformers: Exiles, Megatronus commissioned Solus Prime to create the Requiem Blaster. Later, Megatronus murdered Solus, triggering the first breaking among the Thirteen and leading him to become the Fallen.

Transformers: The Covenant of Primus reveals that Megatronus and Solus Prime were in love, but that Megatronus was prone to bursts of temper and aggression due to his pride and secret shame at being a necessary counter-force to balance out light and darkness within the Thirteen. Following the War of the Primes, he exiled himself from Cybertron after unintentionally murdering Solus Prime.

Animated series[edit]

In the 2010-2013 animated series Transformers: Prime, Megatron named himself after this particular Prime. The Fallen is briefly mentioned in the episode 'Partners', when Starscream tells the Autobots that he wishes to join them, Bulkhead jokes by saying that he's been 'lobbing with The Fallen'. In the episode 'One Shall Rise, Part 1', the Thirteen were mentioned as the ones who vanquished Unicron. It is unclear, however, which of the Thirteen depicted in the flashback scene was the Fallen, due to the animation. In 'One Shall Rise, Part 3', it was said by Ratchet that Megatron named himself after the Fallen's original name: 'Megatronus'.

In the 2015 sequel series, Transformers: Robots in Disguise, Megatronus, one of the original Thirteen Primes, was exiled to another dimension after murdering Solus Prime of which he blames both Earth and Cybertron for. Though trapped in this dimension he is still able to physically communicate with beings in the prime dimension. From his prison dimension, he had observed the Great War between the Autobots and Decepticons, from Cybertron, all across the galaxy and eventually to Earth particulally the battles between both factions' respective leaders, Optimus Prime and Megatron. Impressed and honored by Megatron's respect of his name, Megatronus christened himself a Decepticon, in order to inspire future generations he had foreseen.

In the present day, years after the Decepticons defeat, Megatronus plans to destroy Earth and Cybertron and causes the crash of the Autobot Alchemor ship and releasing its Decepticon criminals, eventually making contact with a pack led by Steeljaw. Megatronus propositions a slightly unwilling Steeljaw into creating a GroundBridge to release him from his prison and in exchange would ensure that Earth becomes his to rule, eventually succeeding and arriving on Earth on Crown City's Liberty Island and declaring his victory. Megatronus subsequently engages Optimus Prime and the other Autobots, and reveals that he has been granted enhanced abilities by an unknown source. Megatronus announces his intention to the Decepticons to use a Spark-fuser to summon what remains of Unicron's anti-spark from Earth's core, and summon the AllSpark from Cybertron and merge them resulting in both planets' dying.

Steeljaw becomes furious and attacks Megatronus only to be swiftly defeated but their fight buys the Autobots enough time to destroy the scepter and foil his plan, causing him to lash out at them in anger. As Optimus continues to attack him Windblade, Sideswipe and Drift manage to cut off Liberty Island statue's arm and land it on him, before Bumblebee, Strongarm and Sideswipe use their combined Decepticon Hunters to emit a blastwave large enough to vaporize Megatronus. However, Bumblebee still questions if he is not dead.

The animated series seems to alter Megatronus' pre-established history, removing the redeeming and tragic qualities that Transformers: Exodus had established (such as his relationship and love for Solus Prime, and his self-doubt and depression at being a dark 'counter' to Prima's light) rather modeling him more in line with his film counterpart, being a cold and brutal tyrant who harbors a hatred against Earth, his murder of Solus Prime apparently fully intentional, and thinking of himself as 'the First Decepticon' despite having no known connection to the groups founding or his namesake. Although, this could be a result of his long imprisonment having driven him insane and embittered him into his current villainous state.

Video games[edit]

Transformers Prime Games

Megatronus appears as an unlockable character in the mobile game for Transformers: Robots in Disguise.

Toys[edit]

The first toy version of the Fallen was released in 2007 as a part of the Transformers: Titanium toy line as a 6' transforming figure. The Fallen would receive several toys for the toy line accompanying Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, in which the toys were a new mold that transformed from robot to Cybertronian Destroyer mode, despite not having been depicted with an alternate mode in the film. Most prominently, he would receive a voyager class toy which first appeared on the internet in February 2009.[5] This toy was designed by Takara Tomy toy designer Hisashi Yuki.[6] With the Fallen standing 1280 centimeters (42 feet) tall, and this toy standing 20 centimeters tall in robot mode, this makes the toy about 1:64 scale.

A Toys 'R' Us exclusive gift set included the Voyager Fallen figure with a gray redeco of Voyager Megatron (2007 version) and a blue/gray redeco of Deluxe Soundwave.[7] In 2010, he would receive a voyager class toy with a light blue/teal redeco with spear and an all-new head sculpt with a removable face to depict when he is decapicitated by Optimus.[8] The figure is retooled with new hands and grooves on the upper torso to hold the spear.[9] Hasbro has stated in an interview that the light blue was to balance the darker blue of the main body.[10]

Megatronus would receive a number of toys in the toy line accompanying the 2015 Transformers: Robots in Disguise television series. Packaged with Optimus Prime, the first Megatronus toy is a smaller Legion-sized mold which can transform from a tank to robot and back. The second toy, 5-Step Changer Megatronus, transforms from robot to tank and back in five steps and is released in an open package, which allows children to touch the toy. His scannable Decepticon insignia is on his robot mode chest/vehicle mode front. As with all Robots in Disguise figures, he has a scannable Decepticon insignia, which scanning in the Robots in Disguise mobile game temporarily unlocks the character if the player has not permanently unlocked it already. The badge is easily scannable while in package. Also made was a 'Warrior Class' figure of Megatronus (the renaming of the Deluxe class for Robots In Disguise) that came in two variants: one exclusive to Toys R Us worldwide with his faceplate down, and a mass release version with the faceplate up. Both versions come with his spear-like scepter.
